Sneak preview Birding Apparatus (2015)

Paleontology of Hearing: Birding Apparatus

Birding Apparatus, established in 2015, is a fictional paleontological instrument that explores how dinosaurs might have sounded. By dramatically slowing down bird sounds from old records, an auditory reconstruction of the prehistoric is created—an experience that becomes almost physical with closed eyes.

The installation got some new updates that can be seen and heard in the Variables, Assumptions and Uncertainties exhibition, currently on show in p.ART.s in Oirlo.

The sound pitch has been further reduced with the aid of a digital pitch shifter, making the dinosaurs not just audible, but tangible. The work balances between science and speculation, posing the question: what is knowledge when it becomes sensory?

Sneak preview of Crescendo in the p.ART.s exhibition cellar

Exhibition; Variables, Assumptions, and Uncertainties – Art as Sensory Exploration - Sept 7 till Oct 5 2025.

In a former industrial mill in Oirlo, where the walls still whisper of its agricultural past, an exhibition unfolds that invites the visitor not only to look, but also to question. Variables, Assumptions, and Uncertainties isn't an exhibition that provides answers—it's a carefully orchestrated interrogation of our senses, our measuring instruments, and our belief in knowledge.

Deep in the Cellar: Crescendo

A cellar space has been specially created for this exhibition, and this intervention is more than spatial: it is dramatic. In the darkness, Crescendo, a semi-transparent chalice-shaped sculpture by Jeroen Huisman, rotates excruciatingly slowly in the sparse light. Constructed with a 3D pen, line by line, the work seems to breathe in time.

Here is a sneak preview

p.ART.s is located at Castenrayseweg 19 in Oirlo. Entry is free.

5 october 2025 - Nymokku (Utrecht) live at finissage p.ART.s

p.ART.s in Oirlo closes exhibition with NYMOKKU.

On Sunday, October 5th, the exhibition "Variables, Assumptions and Uncertainties," which has been on display for the past few weeks at the artist initiative p.ART.s in Oirlo, will conclude with a special concert by the dark-ambient band Nymokku. The Utrecht-based duo (De Wolf and Arpatle) will treat listeners to a unique experience, transforming acoustic instruments and everyday objects into spatial soundscapes through electronic processing.

That afternoon, the new exhibition cellar at p.ART.s will also be symbolically opened. The cellar of the former grain mill beneath p.ART.s has been made accessible especially for this exhibition. The concrete container where grain products were previously dumped is now available as a space where artists can create new presentations in the future. Jeroen Huisman's sculpture "Crescendo" can be viewed in the darkness of this cellar for the last time on Sunday. The semi-transparent chalice, created with a 3D pen, will then make its final, mysterious rounds in sparse light.

"Variables, Assumptions, and Uncertainties" can still be seen on Saturday, October 4th, and Sunday, October 5th, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The closing event will be on Sunday, October 5th, at 3:00 PM with a concert by Nymokku. p.ART.s is located at Castenrayseweg 19 in Oirlo. Entry is free.

In the meantime: exhibition "Variables, Assumptions, and Uncertainties" in p.ART.s, Oirlo - WORK SOLD!

'Crescendo' slowly turning in the dark (handcrafted 3D pen sculpture 2023/24) - photo: Bernard Vink

The opening of "Variables, Assumptions, and Uncertainties" on September 7th in p.ART.s was well-attended by a diverse audience, with an opening word by Martin van den Oever.

Many visitors were pleasantly surprised to be confronted with no fewer than 33 (!) works of art by Piet Siebers and myself, spread throughout the exhibition space, the former mill with its industrial appearance, and Piet's wood-work studio.

The entire building and the flower garden behind it are special and definitely worth a visit. Moreover, a unique surprise has been created in the venue's 4-meter-deep basement. My sculpture 'Crescendo' is presented here in an extremely serene way, slowly turning in the dark, exceeding my expectations! (see photo above).

Last weekend I sold a light sculpture, title: 'Chaos Generator', made this year. The work will be added to a light collection in Utrecht (NL).
