SNEAK PREVIEW of the Snail Language Translator Device V2
Working on the Snail Language Translator Device (SLTD) version 2
I am working on a new version of the Snail Language Translator Device. The first version I made was during the Galichnik residency in Macedonia in 2015. This new sculpture/installation will be shown during the SOUNDSCAPE exhibition in Arnhem, Ecologische Tuin, Prins Hendrikstraat 49 - 51, September 16 and 17.

Finding
A while ago I found a tree on a leaf
New Work: Erexit Quadratum Plastoid
New work! "Erexit Quadratum Plastoid", approx. 50 x 50 x 20 cm, built on a 45 year old Philips ceiling fixture with round fluorescent (replaced by an LED one). Material: thermoplastic (heat glue) + acrylic resin dispersion. Color difference in the photos is due to automatic white balance of my phone.

LOOK BACK: 2018 ''PLASTOID CELL PROJECTOR''.
In 2018 I worked on an artwork with the title ''Plastoid Cell Projector (PCP)'', 40 x 40 x 40 cm. Its a sculpture/installation in which I can project slides made of transparent PLA, Polylactic acid, also known as poly(lactic acid) poly, lactic, acid or polylactide. It is a thermoplastic polyester with backbone formula (C
3H
4O
2)
n or [–C(CH
3)HC(=O)O–]
n.
The slides for the PCP are made by hand with a 3D pencil in the classical 6 x 6 cm format. At the top left of the installation you see a stack of 6 x 6 transparencies.
LOOK BACK: workspaces
Over the past 10 years I have worked in many different temporary studios. You sometimes end up in bizarre and remarkable places, such as here in a former bed factory in Deventer, The Netherlands. I could skate there and it was very cold in the winter. By the way, I advise everyone not to work in temporary spaces. You have to keep moving with your stuff over and over again, and that's kind of dramatic in my case. Moving is a disaster. Fortunately, I now have a permanent base.

LOOK BACK: 1985 (first spatial work)
LOOK BACK: 1985
Here is one of the first spatial works I made at the art academy in Arnhem (NL), back in 1985.
Curved metal and prepared cotton, about 3 meters high. For a photo I put it on the fountain within the Blue Waves (Blauwe Golven) art work in Arnhem, made by Peter Struycken in 1977.
While making this work I seriously injured my hand a week before. A wire of metal whipped as I bent and cut deep into the heel of my left hand, right through the glove. The scar is still there. I looked into deep white flesh, whereupon my legs went limp like chewing gum. I seem to have been knocked out for a moment, because when I opened my eyes I saw the workshop assistant busy with a bandage. A wet cloth lay on my forehead. He was also kind enough to drive me to the emergency room at the hospital. A whopper of a tetanus shot in my thigh and then I was out of 'mortal danger' again 😉.
LOOK BACK: some sculptures from 2020
Here's a look back at my first smaller sculptures (approx. 30 - 40 cm), made 3 years ago from ultra-light PLA thermoplastic material. They are handmade with a 3D pen with a clear nod to the 3D printer. The material PLA used comes from the ''3D printer'' as a filament (wire), but I apply this purely analogously, without the intervention of a computer, building line on line. At the moment I am working on larger sculptures. The material I used in 2020 is (semi) transparent. They are sculptures that can be illuminated, i.e. light that falls on them plays through the material.
An ancient Philips radio from 1946 with stunning ''hifi'' audio
Downteching / uptechning
It is a personal pleasure to mix old appliances with modern technology. I
hate the word obsolete when it comes to devices that once represented
the best of technology at the time and are now discarded on the rubbish
heap. Often there is more to find behind the label ''obsolete''.
I recently ran into a very nice tube radio from Philips, Dutch built from 1948,
completely surrounded by a near perfect bakelite cabinet. By making a
small technical adjustment, the radio now works on bluetooth and I can play my
Spotify playlists via my phone through a 70-year-old speaker!
And how beautiful that sounds! Nice high and clean to very low. All this comes from just one speaker. It is a strange thought that the radio only now shows, in terms of audio dynamics, what it was already capable of 80 years ago, were it not for the fact that the sound carriers at the time (records, radio) when this radio was sold did not have the dynamics that it has now. It is a wealth to have this ancient sound source in the studio!
Working on a new ''Turrim Plastoid'', a vertical sculpture made with thermoplastic material
Last week I began working on a ''Turrim Plastoid''. These are sculptures I make with PLA (Polylactic Acid), a substance coming from the 3D printing world. I use it with a 3D pen and build vertical sculptures with it, BY HAND!
“Entropie Membraan 1” glas-sculptuur in zonlicht!
